17th Russian Government Cup Set to Open in Irkutsk

IRKUTSK, Russia -- The Russian Government Cup is about to start in Irkutsk, and the city's only bandy newspaper, Nasha Sibskana, has published a letter from the governor of the Irkutsk Region, Alexander Tishanin. The English-language version of the letter is reproduced below as it appears on their website. Irkutsk is indeed the "capital of big bandy," and I wish you all smooth ice.

Dear friends!

The people of Angara region are happy to welcome all stars of world bandy on our land. Our fans are well-known by their thorough understanding of all details of this amazing game; they highly appreciate its beauty and are able to value well play of the opponent. No other bandy stadium in the world has such a wave that Irkutsk fans create to support their favorite team.

I am happy to announce that on Irkutsk ice we will see world's best bandy national teams from Sweden, Norway, and Russia. Along with them, our "Baikal-Energy" will also participate in this tournament. This will be a very unique opportunity for Irkutsk people — seeing the game carried out by best players on the planet.

Our fans with experience still remember with delight the games and atmosphere of VIII International tournament "Sovetskaya Rossiya" Cup which was held in Irkutsk in 1986 and became big celebration for our sports fans. "Little World Championship" has given a significant push to bandy expansion and popularization in our region.

Welcome to the capital of big bandy! I wish smooth ice to all tournament participants, beautiful game and unforgettable bright show to all fans and our guests, and to our sport I wish to finally become part of Winter Olympic Games!

Alexandr Tishanin, Governor of Irkutsk Region, Chairman of organizing committee XVII International Bandy Tournament Russian Government Cup
