Baikal Caves to Federation, Shishkin Fired
QUECHEE, Vermont -- Baikal-Energia Irkutsk has managed to save their season, but at a very, very steep price.
As a result of Baikal's refusal to complete their December 16th match against Kuzbass Kemerovo, the Russian Bandy Federation demanded that the club fire coach Alexander Shishkin, strip midfielder Nikolai Kadakin of his captaincy, and make a formal apology to the Kemerovo fans.
On Tuesday, Baikal agreed to all of the federation's terms. Had they failed to do so, the club faced the cancellation of the remainder of their season. The club also received a fine of one million rubles (US$38,000).
"We expected the sanctions we received today," Shishkin told a reporter from Sport-Express newspaper following a meeting with club officials. "It's very difficult for me to comment right now, because so much has happened these past few days." He added that the federation initially wanted to level a fine of 10 million rubles.
Shishkin said that chief assistant coach Yevgeny Erakhtin would take over as head coach, and that he would remain on the staff as an assistant. The captaincy would be handed to Dmitry Sokolov.
"The federation's decision is unheard of, but nonetheless, to us, it's the law," Kadakin said. "The fact that I'm no longer captain is not a big deal. We have plenty of guys on this team who can take my place."
One of the biggest losses, however, was the suspension of forward Alexander Nasonov. Nasonov, who received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty during the Kemerovo game after a questionable call by officials - the incident that prompted Baikal to leave the ice - received a 10 game suspension and a 30,000 ruble fine. The suspension is also non-negotiable - usually, the league allows players and teams to pay higher fine to avoid the suspension, but not in this case.
Nasonov was dumbstruck when he heard the decision. "I didn't even expect a suspension at all. What the federation did today is pure fantasy. I can't even believe I got a 10 game suspension," he said. "If I had touched the referees, why didn't they give me a red card right then? I basically went immediately to the penalty box, and then the rest of the team skated to the bench."
The incident has cast a pall over this season, which began promisingly for Irkutsk. But after five straight wins to open the season, the team has dropped their last three, and their match scheduled for Saturday against Metallurg Bratsk was cancelled pending resolution of the Kemerovo incident.
The team travels to Abakan on Tuesday for a match with Sayany, and Shishkin said the team would be prepared.
"Three cameramen, a few journalists and a lawyer are coming with us. Baikal-Energia will be at full strength in Abakan," he said jokingly. "It's offensive to me that again, nobody said anything about how they actually officiated that game in Kemerovo, and who really stopped that match."

Baikal's Season Hangs in the Balance
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Baikal-Energia Irkutsk may lose a lot more than just one game as a result of their decision to refuse to complete their match December 16th against Kuzbass Kemerovo.
The Russian Bandy Federation's executive committee met on Friday to discuss the matter. In addition to ruling the game a forfeit in favor of Kuzbass, the committee also agreed to consider excluding Baikal-Energia from the remainder of the 2006-07 season. According to league rules, a cancellation of the team's season is a possible consequence of refusing to complete a league game. A decision on the matter is likely in a few days.
As an immediate result, Baikal's match against Metallurg Bratsk Saturday was canceled, and Baikal was forced to pay all costs incurred by the league, their opponents, and the officiating crew for travel to Irkutsk.
One of Baikal's fiercest rivals, SKA-Neftyanik Khabarovsk, has voiced their opposition to banning Baikal for the season. Although Sport-Express newspaper reported that Khabarovsk voted in favor of the ban at the committee meeting, the club released a statement saying that the person who cast the vote, Sergei Sudakov, had actually been released by the team two weeks ago and was not acting as a representative of SKA-Neftyanik.

Federation Issues Fines to Russian Clubs for Fan Behavior
MOSCOW, Russia -- The Russian Bandy Federation is not pleased with the behavior of some fans, and the clubs they root for will have to pay for it.
The federation's disciplinary committee announced Monday a pair of fines that would be leveled against Vodnik Arkhangelsk and Murman-Bandy Murmansk for two incidents at games in which fans threw glass bottles onto the ice. Both clubs were fined 20,000 rubles, or about US$760.
The first incident occured on November 24th when Vodnik hosted Dynamo Moscow, while the second happend on November 29th in a game between Murman and Volga Ulyanovsk.
The committee also decided to suspend SKA-Sverdlovsk Yekaterinburg player Vyacheslav Markin for five games for a hit in Sunday's match at Mayak Krasnoturinsk. He also recieved a 20,000 ruble fine, but according to league rules, he can avoid the suspension by paying an additional fine of 75,000 rubles.

Schedule, Rosters Announced for Russian Government Cup
MOSCOW, Russia -- The Russian Bandy Federation has announced the official rosters of the teams participating in the Russian Government Cup, which will be held in Irkutsk December 8-10. National squads from Russia, Sweden and Norway will be taking part, as will the home side, Baikal-Energia Irkutsk.
There has been a lot of controversy in recent weeks swirling around who would lead the Russian squad. In early September, Vladimir Yanko, Dynamo Moscow's skipper, announced that he was stepping down as Russia's head coach. Yanko had been behind the Soviet and Russian national team benches since 1989, winning five world championships, including the 2006 title last February.
The former Zorky and Dynamo midfielder has also won a staggering 10 national championships as the coach of Yenisei Krasnoyarsk, Vodnik Arkhangelsk and Dynamo.
Yanko cited fatigue and conflict with federation leadership as the reasons for his departure. Several months passed with no decision on the new coach, and on November 20th, Zorky Krasnogorsk submitted a formal letter of complaint about the coaching vacancy. The federation had requested that Zorky release six players for the tournament, players Zorky threatened to withhold if the situation was not resolved soon.
On November 23rd, the federation announced that Yanko's assistant at Dynamo, the legendary Sergei Lomanov, would take over the national team. Until the summer of 2005, Lomanov had been a longtime player and then coach for Yenisei, a team with which he is nearly synonomous. He had spent several seasons with the national team as an assistant, and when Yanko made the move from Vodnik to Dynamo 18 months ago (and his son, Sergei Lomanov, Jr., one of Russia's top snipers, was traded to Moscow), Lomanov ended his brief retirement and signed on as the club's assistant coach.
At the time of the announcement, Lomanov was working in Kazan with a crop of young players Dynamo had loaned to Raketa to give them more playing time and help their development.
Despite Dynamo's stacked roster, only one player from the club, goaltender Kirill Khvalko, was selected for Russia. Midfielder Daniel Liw was also released by Dynamo to play for the Swedes. Kuzbass Kemerovo led all teams with four selections for Russia, including snipers Alexander Sapega and Pavel Ryazantsev. Some Zorky fans may be torn at this tournament, as three players will suit up for Russia, while three more will play for Sweden, including the potent duo of Johann and Hans Andersson.
